Project Description

The Arts & Science Council is accepting qualifications from artists/artist teams for a public art opportunity at the new Mecklenburg County East Community Resource Center.

The selected artist will work with the ASC, Mecklenburg County Asset and Facilities Management, Gensler, Neighboring Concepts, LandDesign, and the communities of East Charlotte, NC to create landmark, integrated artworks that draw inspiration from the adaptive and life-sustaining qualities of the site’s surrounding wetlands and support the physical and psychological needs of visitors.

The selected artist should consider ways that art can provide visual continuity throughout the site, while assisting with pedestrian wayfinding from proposed public transit stops to the main entrance of the East CRC. The artwork should align with the County’s project vision and support the principles of trauma informed design – creating physical spaces that promote safety, well-being, healing, and dignity.

Project Background

In 2015, Mecklenburg County approved a master plan for government facilities with the goal of consolidating County services into accessible locations that provide high-quality service to customers while fostering improved work environments for employees. Central to this plan is the development of five Community Resource Centers (CRCs) strategically located throughout Mecklenburg County. Community Resource Centers are designed to strengthen individuals and families, promote health and wellness, and build stronger communities. CRCs are distinguished by their seamless customer experience and fully integrated health and human services delivery model. Upon entering any of the five CRC locations, customers are intended to feel safe, welcomed, and reassured.

The Community Resource and Health Center serves as a beacon of healing and empowerment—supporting individuals and families as they move from dependence toward independence. Grounded in the County’s vision, the center is conceived as a restorative environment that promotes health, wellness, and dignity through integrated services and human-centered design. Guided by principles of trauma-informed design, the facility prioritizes safety, connection, and choice for both community members and staff.
